Sustainable Landscapes Definition
There are 5 elements that define a Sustainable Landscape; Functionality, Maintainability, Ecological Awareness, Cost efficiency, and Visual Pleasure and only when all 5 have been applied can a landscape be defined as Sustainable.
Functionality
A functional plan will take the existing space and the needs of the homeowner and make them work harmoniously. Utility areas are more accessible; pathways and driveways wide enough to accommodate the flow of traffic; patios and decks appropriately proportioned and sited to provide a safe environment. Movement from area to area, maintenance, leisure, and recreational activities are all easily accomplished in a functional landscape.
Maintainability
By incorporating a concise plan at the beginning of your landscape project can significantly reduce ongoing maintenance. The use of plant materials that meet their required growing conditions and proper placement of all plant material, reduces time spent caring for the gardens.
